Hand-knotted Afghan Samarkand rugs and carpets are a relatively new production for us. We always look for something different or unusual, which certainly ticks that box. These rugs make a striking statement with their beautiful colours and the mixture of traditional and modern design. rugs have been made recently in northwest Afghanistan, and the name has been given to their unique design. In Uzbekistan, Samarkand is famous, along with for being on the Silk Road, which linked China with the West. We hope you also like this attractive, colourful carpet as much as we do.
The production and design of these pieces stem from a group who created the plans for a specific colour palette and set the format to graph paper; the drawing and the wool are collected by Afghan weavers who cross the border into Pakistan, where they are paid a retainer, sometime later the weaver returns with a carpet to be paid, which then has to be finished.
The final carpets stage in Pakistan involves many processes. First, initial tensioning may be undertaken, followed by surface clipping, herbal washing, and tumbling. His combination of Afghan weaving and finishing in Pakistan has succeeded greatly. These carpets are closely knotted and usually finished with an exciting and unusual bound multicoloured fringe.
